Ben joined our staff in November 2016. He has bachelor’s degrees from the University of Memphis in finance and the University of Alaska Fairbanks in fisheries. He also received a master’s of science in fisheries from UAF. His master’s work examined variability in the diets of Arctic cod, Arctic staghorn sculpin, and shorthorn sculpin in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas to better understand their importance in Arctic marine food webs. Ben has taken part in multiple research cruises to the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas and has used bottom- and midwater-trawling methods to investigate fishes and various invertebrates. He has also worked as a fishery biologist on the Yukon River, where he specialized in using sonar to estimate Pacific salmon escapement, and as a fly fishing guide in remote Alaska.
