4th Grade Discovery Room Update (October)

Mrs. Van Dycks’ fourth grade students were able to observe several salmon fry collected from Hippie Cove and a single salmon smolt collected from Odiak Pond. They saw that the small fry stayed together in a group to be safe from predators! Due to the extreme weather, they were unable to travel to Eyak Lake, but they used the water monitoring kits to compare the quality of water samples collected from Hippie Cove and Odiak pond, the same locations where we collected our fish. Students discussed each of those habitats as described by the instructor, and they identified components of those habitats that are necessary for salmon life. They used photo cards to display the stages of the salmon life cycle, and they discussed the importance of estuaries to the young salmon.
