2023 ANNUAL REPORT

35 Years

Starting in 1986, a group of Cordova fishermen, scientists, and resource managers connected over bad coffee and informal lunches to explore a question: How can we better understand this globally-relevant region and share what we learn for the benefit of local people, and the world?

The result of those meetings was a commitment to develop a community-based organization to serve as a repository for the knowledge gained from nearly 30 million acres of coastline, wetlands, estuaries, mountains, rivers and streams, and to connect that knowledge to educational, public, and entrepreneurial endeavors.

The dream was ambitious.

Then, as the Prince William Sound Science Center’s nonprofit papers were being developed in March 1989, the Exxon Valdez ran aground on Bligh Reef, spilling more than 11 million gallons of crude oil into our backyard of Prince William Sound – forever altering the environment and the fishery. Shortly after, on Earth Day – April 22, 1989 – our legal papers were filed and the real work began.

In the 35 years since our incorporation, we have remained steadfast in our commitment to support an informed citizenry, advance scientific knowledge for resource managers and policy makers, and advance the resilience of ecosystems and communities in our region and beyond. With our new 20,000 sq ft facility, complete with a running seawater lab, we can grow capacity, programs, and partnerships to help ensure our region is a stronghold of resilience for decades to come.

We are here today, thanks to the connections made with and between thousands of donors, funders, research partners, elected officials, teachers, fishermen, and more. In a world that seems increasingly disconnected, connection remains at the heart of our work and beliefs. We invite you to connect with us in supporting the resilience of one of the world’s last great places, home of the world’s richest waters.

Sincerely,

Katrina Sig
