Kelp the Sound Workshop Series

PWSSC hosts an annual Kelp the Sound workshop series that is free to anyone in the PWS region interested in learning more about seaweed farming. Attendees learn from Alaska-based farmers and other stakeholders in the state about an array of topics, including:

  • How to pick a farm site
  • Permitting your farm
  • Collecting source seed, hatchery ops, and out-planting
  • Harvesting
  • Processing (drying, blanching, etc)
  • Marketing your products
  • The current state of science and industry

Attendance is generally limited to 20 in-person participants, and each workshop may be provided virtually via GoToMeeting. Workshops may range from 2 to 8 hours, depending on which topics are covered, and occur annually in March. Announcements for upcoming workshops (March 2024 is in the works) will be included on this page, along with information about how to participate.

2023 Kelp the Sound Workshop

Our 2023 workshop was attended by 15 in-person and five virtual participants from around Prince William Sound. Thanks to the NOAA/NMFS Alaska Marine Education and Training Mini-Grant Program for funding our first workshop and to those who attended.
